What is a minimal pair?
A segmental minimal pair consists of two words in the same language variety with different meanings and the same sound sequence except at one position. English pill and kill provide a familiar example: the initial consonant changes while the remaining sequence stays the same. The comparison concerns pronunciation, not the number of written letters. A valid pair is evidence of a sound contrast in that variety, not a judgment about which pronunciation is better.
The method belongs to phonology, the study of how a language organizes sounds. Phonetics describes the sounds themselves. Minimal-pair analysis connects the two by asking whether a particular difference can distinguish words.
This guide focuses on segmental pairs: comparisons involving a consonant or vowel position. It does not attempt a complete account of stress, tone, or signed-language contrasts.
What must stay the same?
Start with the pronunciation, align its sound positions, and ask whether replacing one sound changes the word's meaning while the rest stays constant.
Three checks matter:
- Both items are words of the language variety being examined.
- Their meanings differ.
- Their sound sequences differ at just one aligned position.
The minimal-pair chapter in Essentials of Linguistics, second edition gives English [pɪl] pill and [kɪl] kill, as well as [lɪp] lip and [lɪk] lick. The changed sound can occur initially or finally; it need not be the first sound.
For this exercise, treat those transcriptions as the source's simplified English examples, not narrow records of every speaker's pronunciation. Preserve the chosen variety and level of detail when you extend the list yourself.
How do you check the English examples position by position?
Separate spelling, transcription, and meaning on your worksheet. Italics below indicate ordinary words; square brackets contain the phonetic notation supplied by the source.

The first comparison holds the following [ɪl] sequence constant. The second holds the preceding [lɪ] sequence constant. Both isolate [p] versus [k], but in different locations.
Notice the spelling of lick: four letters, while this transcription contains three segment symbols. Counting letters would make lip and lick look mismatched. Counting the represented sounds reveals the comparison.

What does a minimal pair tell you about phonemes?
A phoneme is a contrastive sound category in a language. The Simon Fraser University phoneme reference connects phonemic analysis with sound differences that distinguish meaning.
A valid minimal pair provides evidence that the two differing sounds are not merely interchangeable realizations of the same category in that context. The important point is contrast within a language system. An IPA chart alone cannot tell you which distinctions a particular language uses to distinguish words.
An allophone is a phonetic variant of a phoneme, as the SFU allophone entry explains. Hearing a physical difference does not, by itself, establish a difference between phonemes. You also need evidence about how that difference functions.
Keep the conclusion local: this pair supports this contrast in the variety being analyzed. It does not establish a complete sound inventory, tell you every realization of either sound, or identify a pronunciation as defective.
Can you try an original miniature dataset?
The following is an invented teaching dataset, not words documented from a real community. Assume that all four items belong to one imaginary variety, have the meanings shown, and differ in no unmarked stress, tone, or other property. Each displayed consonant or vowel symbol represents one segment for this exercise.

First compare A with B. Both have two positions. The vowel [a] stays fixed, while [p] changes to [t]. The invented meanings differ, so this is a minimal pair within the stipulated dataset.
Next compare A with C. This time [p] remains fixed and [a] changes to [i]. That supports a different contrast, between the two vowels.
Now compare A with D. Both positions change: [p] to [t] and [a] to [i]. These are different words, but this comparison is not a minimal pair under the one-position test.
The conclusion comes from the stated exercise assumptions. It is not a discovery about English or any other actual language, and it is not a claim that a researcher recorded these forms.
What is the answer key for all six comparisons?
Four distinct items produce six unordered pairs: 4 × 3 ÷ 2 = 6. Dividing by two avoids counting A–B and B–A as separate comparisons.

There are four qualifying pairs. Two support the consonant contrast [p] versus [t], and two support the vowel contrast [a] versus [i]. Four pairs therefore do not mean four independent contrast types.
This small matrix is useful because it makes the rejected comparisons visible. A worksheet that lists only successful pairs can hide the reason a tempting candidate fails.
What if two words differ in more than one place?
Label the extra differences rather than silently ignoring them. A near-minimal pair is similar enough to be potentially useful but does not meet the strict one-position condition.
Essentials of Linguistics discusses near-minimal pairs when exact pairs are difficult to find. Their evidential value requires further analysis: another difference might help explain where the target sounds occur. One near match does not have the same force as a clean minimal pair.
Use two columns in your notes: “target difference” and “other differences.” If the second column is not empty, do not report the pair as exact. Keep it for further investigation rather than forcing it into the answer key.
Conversely, failing to find a minimal pair in a short list does not prove two sounds are allophones. Your vocabulary sample may simply be too small. The next step is more distributional evidence, not a confident claim from missing data.
Why do accents and transcription choices matter?
A comparison is only as clear as its scope. Do not take one word from one dictionary's accent and the other from a different speaker's recording, then assume their unchanged portions match.
For real-language work, record the language variety, source, relevant word meanings, and the transcription convention. If you listen to a recording, note which speaker and which occurrence you used. Do not claim a recording has been checked when you have only read its transcript.
The International Phonetic Association's interactive chart supplies symbol descriptions and reference recordings. These help identify symbols; they do not replace evidence that two words occur and contrast in a particular language.
Also avoid treating every visible mark as a separate segment. The IPA includes diacritics that modify symbols. Our IPA and transcription collection provides the notation context; the present two-position exercise deliberately avoids those complications.
What makes a useful minimal-pair worksheet?
Use a compact evidence record rather than a long unsourced word list:
- Name the language variety and source.
- Write both words and their meanings.
- Add consistent transcriptions, preserving the source's conventions.
- Align the segment positions.
- Mark the target difference and any additional differences.
- State the limited conclusion the comparison supports.
For the invented A–B example, the final line is: “Under the exercise assumptions, [p] and [t] contrast before [a].” It is not “these sounds contrast in every language.”
The distinction between [p] and [t] concerns a different comparison from a voiced–voiceless pair. Our voicing guide covers that physical dimension separately. Minimal means a controlled difference in the word comparison, not that every pair tests voicing.
