How can a beginner hear the contrast?

Start with a sustained fricative pair. Alternate [ssss] and [zzzz] while keeping the tongue position as steady as possible, or alternate [ffff] and [vvvv] while keeping the lower lip near the upper teeth. The change in buzz is easier to sustain than the short closure of a stop such as [p] or [b].

Lightly touching the front of the throat may provide a rough cue to vibration. It is only a classroom demonstration, not a measurement. Vibration from a neighboring vowel, partial voicing, and a very brief sound can make touch misleading. Use recordings or acoustic evidence when a precise analysis matters.

Why stops make the simple rule less simple

Stops include a complete closure followed by release, so their voicing contrast is not always heard as a continuous buzz. Timing, aspiration, duration, and the surrounding sounds can all contribute to how listeners categorize a stop. Languages do not implement every nominal “voiced versus voiceless” contrast in the same phonetic way.
